Does listening to music have the potential to alter the world? Yes, it does. But the changes still have to start with you. If you learn how to listen to music very honestly, you can learn the secrets of the ages by writing song lyrics.
"I've been cheated. Been mistreated. When will I be Loved?" This set of lyrics written by Linda Rondstadt years ago gave rise to my understanding of the tansformative power of listening to and writing song lyrics. I was in college, studying the book Beloved, by Toni Morrison. I had a paper due in one day;' I was completely stressed out; and I had no clue what to write about.
I took a nap and woke to the lyrics of Ms. Rondstadts song. It was buzzing in my ears, and I had the sudden feeling that I should pay close attention. I intuitively felt that writing song lyrics were important.
They were.
Although I do not recall the precise details, the few lines from that song gave me all the insight I needed to write song lyric in a very short time. The line "When will I be loved?" was a doorway into my understanding of the song Beloved. I realized that the central character just wanted to be loved, and that was all I needed to know to access enough creativity to write a terrific song lyric. From that moment on I never doubted the pure potentiality of song lyrics.
The above is just one illustration of the power of writing song lyrics. Many more are possible. For instance, always pay close attention to any song lyrics that run through your head.
When lyrics run though your head, they stop being "out there." For all practical purposes, if you are singing the song lyrics, then you might as well have written them in the first place. You are imbuing them with meaning, and they are now "in" you, so to speak.
So, how so you benefit from this knowledge? By understanding that what you are writing the song lyric about, is about you. You can gain great self-awreness and wisdom by looking carefully at what you are singing. Do not assume that these are just random song lyrics running though your mind. They are not random. You are choosing to write them and they have a message.
The message is usually about something you wish you had or about something you are fearful of. The song you are singing offers you clues as to what your deepest values and beliefs are. These deep attitudes are what you need to uncover in order to become more self-aware and powerful. So next time song lyrics run thourgh your head or come onto the radio at an odd time, pay very close attention. They just might change your life or give you an answer you needed.

The Beatles Albums : The Top Three by Bobby Beansprout

1. The White Album - Just an absolute sprawling masterpiece. The most timeless album I've ever heard. Songs that sound like they are from the 1920s "honey pie", songs that define the 1960s "revolution", songs that defy classification "revolution #9" ... the album is all over map and is better for it. More than any other album I've ever heard I always find something fresh about this album whenever I hear it. Although disc 1 (or LP 1 depending on your age) has always been my favorite but disc 2 in some ways is even more interesting than the first.

2. Sgt Pepper - Picking the second best Beatles album of all time is extremely difficult but I have to go with Sgt Pepper. I think it's now to the point where it's an underrated album. People have been talking about it being overrated for so long that it's actually now underrated. This album is fantastic. For me there's not a track that could possibly be taken off. Some don't like "When I'm 64" but it's really quite an accomplishment. I enjoy all of McCartney's songs of this type whether it be When I'm 64, Honey Pie, or Your Mother Should Know --- I think it's great to make this song that sounds so much like some other time. And the sequencing... for God's sake. From Within You Without You to When I'm 64? Sgt Pepper is like travelling through the world and through time visiting different places. It doesn't hurt the album's ranking any that A Day In The Life is quite likely the greatest song ever recorded.

#3 Abbey Road - Abbey Road sometimes feels a bit too slick to me and it doesn't have quite the imagination of Sgt Pepper which is why I rank it below. I think Abbey Road may be the top album for someone with a bit more of a straight ahead enjoyment of rock music. Songs like Come Together, Something, Oh! Darling, and Here Comes The Sun are just great great songs. For me it's the second half that is really great. While sometimes, as great as the first half is, it can seem to drag a bit atleast on my 1000th listen (which is about where I'm at now I'm sure) the second half is still incredibly enjoyable. You Never Give Me Your Money is one of the most underrated Beatles tracks in my opinion. You never hear people talk about that track but it's just great. And then once you get into Sun King and the rest, forget about it. Just perfection.

Master the Basics!
Mastering the basics means being able to play in all keys. Being able to transpose any song to any other key - on the spot preferably.
Did you know that 95% of guitarists DON'T master the basics. Oh yes, they mean to get around to it, but they hardly ever do.
Why is that? Well, it's because they think it's boring, complicated and too much hard work. And most of all - no fun! And mostly they were right. Well, it needn't be that way. Mastering the basics can be a lot of fun if you go about it in a methodical set-by-step way.
What does mastering the basics entail?
There are 6 basic steps you need to follow:
1. Learn the names of all notes on all strings, one string at a time.
2. Learn how to construct a C Major scale.
Basic must-know guitar theory. Easy stuff.
3. Learn how the chords of the major scale are made and what they are... their names etc. C Dm Em F G Am Bdim.
Basic chord construction knowledge.
4. Learn the triad patterns for the C major scale all over the fret board.
Triads are simple 3-note chords. Easy and fun to learn and play.
5. Learn to play those triads with common chord progressions.
Learn to play and apply the triads to the most common chord progressions that fit thousands and thousands of songs.
6. Learn to do step 5 in all keys.
Once you can do steps one to five in the key of C, it's real easy to learn it for the other 11 major keys.
Hint: It's much easier than you think. All the patterns are exactly the same as what you learn for C major. You don't have to learn any new patterns. Cookie cutter stuff.
It really is not hard at all. All you need is a methodical step-by-step method that makes sense and is easy and fun to use.
Having taught the guitar for many years, I see the majority of beginners experiencing the same problems and making the same mistakes over and over again in their quest to learn how to play guitar. It's my job to steer them through these problem areas.
These "mistakes" are basic errors that most beginners naturally tend to make. But these mistakes can cause major problems if you allow them to become habits in your playing. Unfortunately, 90% of guitarists have done just that!

His voice has been described as having a unique tonality and extraordinary range, giving him the ability to tackle an array of songs and melodies that none of his contemporaries could conquer. In performing his music, Presley exuded sexuality and swagger, becoming a role model for generations of young rebels.
Elvis was born on January 8, 1935, in East Tupelo, Mississippi. He was the son of Gladys and Vernon Presley, a sewing machine operator and a truck driver. Presley's twin brother Jesse Garon was stillborn, and Elvis grew up as an only child. Presley cut his first recordings--the songs "My Happiness" and "That's When the Your Heartaches Begin"-- in 1953 at Memphis Recording Studios, a sideline record producer Sam Phillips had started at his Sun Records studios, where anyone could record a ten inch album for four dollars. After recording several more songs for Phillips, the record producer is said to have found what he was looking for--"a white man with the Negro sound and the Negro feel". After signing with RCA in 1956 and recording "Heartbreak Hotel" Elvis became a national star. On January 28, 1956, he made his television debut on the Dorsey brothers' Stage Show, followed by six consecutive appearances. In March, Colonial Thomas Parker became Elvis' manager. He would receive 25% of Elvis' earnings through a contract that lasted the singer's lifetime and beyond.
By the 1960's Elvis had become a pop culture icon. He toured and played old songs and new hits on the road and in Las Vegas, where he was known for his sartorial splendor and highly electric performances. He started to break all sorts of entertainment records including those for concert attendance, television ratings, and records sales, becoming one of the best-selling artists in music history. Elvis continued to perform until he passed away at age 42 from a combination of obesity, depression and abuse of prescription drugs. Although Elvis has been gone for three decades, his popularity has remained in tact. Thousands make the pilgrimage to Graceland each year to pay tribute to the king of modern rock.

Hip Hop on the Big Screen -- Reel Success Creates a New Genre of Film by Sharath Cherian

It started out simple enough. Film studios and movie makers started to pepper their soundtracks with hip hop or rap tunes here and there. Soon more and more songs began to appear on film soundtracks and trailers eventually leading to most of the films non instrumental score being dominated by hip hop music. As the music became more dynamic elements of the film, movies started featuring hip hop stars trying their acting chops. Once films like New Jack City (Ice T), Boyz n the Hood (Ice Cube) and Juice (Tupac Shakur) hit it big the floodgates were opened suddenly creating a new genre of films almost entirely created around hip hop and rap.
In as little as 10 years films featuring hip hop stars and music became top grossing movies creating a format that has now become commonplace in Hollywood. Take for example 2002's Exit Wounds starring DMX and Steven Sigal. That film grossed $52 million domestically. Flashback to 1985 and the low budget film Krush Groove and you'll see the early beginnings of how this genre of hip hop films began. At that time these films were in essence a new way to promote new artists -- for that film LL Cool J and Run DMC -- and to further popularize the burgeoning sound that would eventually become a billion dollar industry. After a series of less memorable films like Beat Street, Breakin and the Disorderlies, the 90's suddenly introduced moviegoers to the aforementioned films and directors who wanted to do more than put rappers and hip hop artists in movies. Movie makers like John Singleton, Spike Lee and the Hughes Brothers tapped into the raw and explosive talent some of these artists had outside the studio and suddenly a whole new crop of movie stars who would become as visible on the silver screen as they were audible on the radio and on their records.
The Silver Screen's Undiscovered Gold Mine
Thanks to the critically acclaimed and commercial success of movies like Boyz in the Hood Hollywood soon discovered untapped profitability this genre. Rather than just plunking some big named hip hop star or rapper into a plot there were opportunities to create entire stories about the life and culture that had already made the music so successful. On the one hand, it created opportunities for talented artists like Will Smith, Ice Cube and Tupac Shakur to show off their versatility. On the other hand it also this world and this culture to a whole new audience that had never had such a clear glimpse of this universe. While sometimes unpleasant and uncomfortable, the gritty nature and subject matter of some of these films like Menace to Society offered a truer perspective of the African American community that many movie goers thought to be glorified or exaggerated in the songs and posturing of some of the artists. Ultimately, this new brand of film and new generation of filmmakers found success not just in the black community but across all racial divides and found a new way to express their art in a bolder, bigger format.
Not just a genre but an award winning genre
The same year that saw DMX in a starring role, 8 Mile starring Eminem made $116,700,000 domestically and nabbed an Academy Award for best song (Lose Yourself). Bringing home the point even stronger at the 2006 Oscars, rapper Ludacris was part of the ensemble cast of the film Crash, which won best picture. Additionally, actor Terrence Howard was nominated for best actor in the hip hop film Hustle & Flow which also featured the oscar-winning song It's Hard out Here for a Pimp by Three 6 Mafia. The industry has spoken; hip hop and rap are now a viable film genre that is no longer just a vehicle to help artists sell records but have just as much value and meaning as any other film out there.

The popularity of the electric guitar began in the big band era when guitarists needed to amplify their instruments to compete with the large brass sections found in most jazz orchestras. In the beginning, electric guitars were primarily made up of hollow archtop acoustic bodies with electromagnetic transducers attached, to convert the sound into electricity for amplification.
Some of the earliest electric guitars, then just hollow bodied acoustic instruments used pickups made of tungsten, and the guitars themselves were manufactured by Rickenbacker in the 30's. In 1935, Rickenbacker manufactured a solid bodied electric guitar made from Bakelite, which was nicknamed "The Frying Pan" for its shape.
In the early 1940's, after working after hours at a Gibson Guitar factory, guitarist Les Paul created a guitar consisting of a simple 4x4 wood post with a neck attached to it, homemade pickups and hardware, and two detachable Swedish hollow body halves attached to the sides for appearance only. He called it his "log" guitar, and is considered to be the first of its kind. The solid body Les Paul guitar sold by Gibson in 1952 does not share its design or its hardware.
In 1950 and 51, Leo Fender designed the first guitar to be commercially successful. Originally named the Esquire, it featured a single magnetic pickup, with the two-pickup version being called the Broadcaster; this was later renamed to Telecaster in homage of the television. The telecaster featured an ash body, 21 frets and a bolt-on neck, which allowed for cost effective and easy manufacturing or replacement.
In 1954, Fender introduced perhaps one of the most recognised guitars of all time, the Fender Stratocaster, or simply the "Strat"; known for its double cut-away body design, 3 pick-ups and synchronized tremolo mechanism. Leo Fender is also credited for the design of the commercially successful Fender Precision Bass, first introduced in 1951.
The electric guitar achieved wide popularity in the 1960's; with the success of guitar-based pop groups. Electric guitars were soon being manufactured by individuals and companies all over the world, often as copies, and became available to the keen amateur as well as the professional musician.
Electric guitars are now seen in many genres of music, from Rock to Surf, over to Ska and Punk. Fender and Gibson, perhaps the two biggest guitar manufacturers of all, have helped inspire nearly three generations to learn or get in touch with music, and they will continue to do so for a long time to come.

The art of ballet dance is actually very old. It takes a disciplined and athletic body to perform the beautiful movements that tell us a story. Performances usually take place in a theater. Many young girls fantasize about becoming stars in the ballet world. In actuality it takes a lot of hard work and many years if they make it at all.
Since so many French names are given to ballet postures, for instance the plie, most people think that the dance itself began in France. Actually ballet is known to go back as far as 15th century Italy. These movements performed during the Renaissance led to the French development of ballet as we now know it. The Queen's Ballet Company was the very first and was located in France.
As the years passed the beautiful dances began to be performed in gorgeous and complicated costumes, and intricate sets and props were introduced. Royalty fell in love with the ballet as it became more popular. The costumes became more elaborate and within a few hundred years dancing on toes began. Since there were no block toe shoes yet, the dancers could only hold a pose for a few seconds at a time.
La Sylphide is credited with introducing the romantic style of ballet in the 1800s. This style used the toe dancing technique extensively and brought about many changes to ballet. However, to answer the question posed by many, the traditional tutu came from the ballet Giselle where the tutu was worn by all the ghostly spirits.
All romantic ballets focused on women and this encouraged women to take on increasingly to become ballerinas. They grew up in Russia, Denmark and even the United States. While ballet prospered in other nations, it started declining in France. The decline could be because ballet was seen as being very other worldly with mythical steps.
The shift from mythical steps to a more reasonable style that could be co-related to human movements came about in the twentieth century. This was because of the many different styles of dance that were becoming increasingly popular. The change that started in the twentieth century continues to transform ballet even today where it incorporates different styles of dance.
These days ballets have evolved as a combination with another style of dance to produce a new symphony in the art of dance. This process began in 1944, when a ballet called Fancy Free was introduced. This ballet used jazz dance with the ballet steps to create a revolutionary dance form.
Today many more modern ballets are being performed, while at the same time audiences still love the classical and romantic forms. All of these styles are still taught and performed as ballet is immensely popular. People are constantly impressed at the variety and complexity of movements that humans are capable of. Even though most of us will never be able to perform these moves, we can marvel and dream when we see ballet on stage.

The origin of hip hop music can be traced back as far as the ancient tribes in Africa. Rap has been compared with the chants, drumbeats and foot-stomping African tribes performed before wars, the births of babies, and the deaths of kings and elders. Historians have reached further back than the accepted origins of hip-hop. It was born as we know it today in the Bronx, cradled and nurtured by the youth in the low-income areas of New York City.
Fast-forward from the tribes of Africa to the ghettos of Kingston, Jamaica in the late sixties. The impoverished of Kingston gathered together in groups to form DJ conglomerates. They spun roots and culture records and communicated with the audience over the music. At the time, the DJ's comments weren't as important as the quality of the sound system and its ability to get the crowd moving. Kool Herc grew up in this community before he moved to the Bronx.
During the late sixties, reggae wasn't popular with New Yorkers. As a DJ, Kool Herc spun rhythm and blues records to please his party crowd. But, he had to add his personal touch. During the breaks, Herc began to speak to his audience as he had learned to do in Jamaica. He called out, the audience responded, and then he pumped the volume back up on the record. This call and response technique was nothing new to this community who'd been reared in Baptist and Methodist churches where call and response was a technique used by the speakers to get the congregation involved. Historians compare it to the call and response performed by Jazz musicians and was very much a part of the culture of Jazz music during the renaissance in Harlem.
Herc's DJ style caught on. His party's grew in popularity. He began to buy multiple copies of the same albums. When he performed his duties as a DJ, he extended the breaks by using multiple copies of the same records. He chatted, as it is called in dance hall, with his audience for longer and longer periods.
Others copied Herc's style. Soon a friendly battle ensued between New York DJs. They all learned the technique of using break beats. Herc stepped up the game by giving shout-outs to people who were in attendance at the parties and coming up with his signature call and response. Other DJs responded by rhyming with their words when they spoke to the audience. More and more DJs used two and four line rhymes and anecdotes to get their audiences involved and hyped at these parties.
One day, Herc passed the microphone over to two of his friends. He took care of the turn table and allowed his buddies to keep the crowd hyped with chants, rhymes and anecdotes while he extended the breaks of different songs indefinitely. This was the birth of rap as we know it.
Hip-hop has evolved from the days of the basement showdowns to big business in the music industry. In the seventies and eighties, the pioneers and innovators of the rap record was the DJ. He was the guy who used his turntable to create fresh sounds with old records. Then, he became the guy who mixed these familiar breaks with synthesizers to produce completely new beats. Not much has changed in that aspect of hip-hop. The guy who creates a rap beat is still the heart of the track. Now, we call him the producer. Even though some DJs work as producers as well as DJs (quite a few start out as DJs before they become producers), today's title "DJ" doesn't carry the same connotative meaning it did in the eighties. Today's hip-hop producer performs the same tasks as the eighty's DJ.

As a music teacher that teaches private lessons, I am so excited when I get a call from a parent that wants their child to learn to play music by taking lessons. My excitement comes from the fact that I believe that learning to play music is one of the most enjoyable lessons of life that a person can experience. Learning to play music at an early age means that a child actually is learning a new language. Just as children pick up languages quicker than adults, the same is true of music. This also includes the manual dexterity issues as well as music related thinking skills such as improvising and ear training. As I believe is true with formal education, the single most important determinant in the success of a child in learning to play music is the support and the involvement of the parents. As lessons begin, here are some tips that supportive parents can do.
Instill realistic practice goals and times
The first question a lot of people ask is how much should my child practice? For a young child whose attention span is not very long, it can be as short as few minutes a day, later 15 minutes a day and then increase to 30 minutes a day. This can vary from child to child and is really based on the maturity level rather than the age level.
Watch for frustration
As a parent and teacher, you want to make sure that the practice time is as fun as possible. As a parent you can pay close attention to their moods, and then act accordingly by delaying, shortening or canceling their practice time. If they are too tired or hungry to practice, the practice time will not be effective.
Play Music around the House and in the Car
Just like learning a new language, hearing music whether playing or singing or listening will help them in the long run as they are learning to play music for themselves.
Introduce them to different Music Venues
No, parents, we don't want to take them to the local bar. There are always concerts, festivals, and workshops where they can be introduced to different types of music. My belief is to not choose for them but introduce them. You never know when they might see a musician that will inspire them to achieve new heights.
Playing With Others
As they get older, introduce them to the possibility of playing with others or in groups. Some of the lessons that can be learned while playing with others are learning how to play a solo, continuing to play even if you make a mistake, and learning how to play loud and soft with others.
Don't Quit
Learning how to play any type of music on any type of instrument is a lifelong journey. I encourage parents to help their children stick with it. This will be a decision that they will never regret.

The Bridge: Is a wedge of wood where the strings attach to the body,it has a saddle (plastic or bone) that helps transmit vibration from strings to the body.
The Neck: Has the fingerboard on the face of the neck. It has metal pieces cut into it that are spaced these are called frets.
The Nut: Attached to the end of the neck, keeps strings suspended along with the bridge.
The Head: Attached to the top of the neck, has six tuning pegs where strings attach and can be tuned by adjusting the tension. As you figure out how to buy a guitar take into consideration your specific needs such as sound, comfort and budget. If this is your very first guitar at this point you might not actually know what you want, don't worry.
Do your research first. Go to a local music store and test drive different guitars. You will also find a wealth of helpful information there. Take someone with you to the store who knows how to play if you don't. Have them play something that reflects what you will be learning to play. Nothing too advanced.
Be sure to ask the salespeople questions. You will find some are very knowledgeable and more than happy to share what they know. An important part of how to buy a guitar is asking questions. The iPod, in all its aliases such as nano, and the shuffle are practically antiques. Functionally, it's really just a personal stereo, which was originally patented by Srirekam Jayram Purushotam in 1974. It first reached true commercial success with the electronics giant Sony in 1979 when they sold their first Walkman model called the Soundabout. The iPod is still filling the same need, but using newer technology to do it better. Many of today's generation of clones marching around with white ear buds growing out of their ears, have probably never heard of a Walkman. Much in the same way the next batch will have no idea what the heck an iPod is.
There is technology just waiting in the wings which will replace the iPod as we know it. The iPod (and most mp3 players) markets, and differentiates its line of products by capacity. All the models really do the same thing, with the same set of controls. The biggest difference between them and the biggest factor determining price, is the capacity of the drives inside them. The second differentiating factor is of course the color. Kind of hard to charge more for blue or pink though. Anyway, there will come a time, when actually having a drive in your mp3 player or iPod will not be necessary. It really doesn't make sense. It makes the unit bigger, and drives the price up. Those little drives are far more expensive than comparable drives for bigger machines. Carrying your entire song collection on your person is kind of risky as well. What happens when Uncle Bob thinks its funny to pick you up and throw you into his new pool? Ooops, is that your 80Gb iPod with 20,000 of your favorite being sucked towards the pool drain? You've got that thing backed up right? Ha!
The answer is of course to store your entire song/picture collection on a server somewhere with proper data protection and backup facilities. Then all you need is a network ready receiver about half the size of a iPod nano with the ability to access your music off that protected server wherever you are. Capacity becomes meaningless. Running out of disk space on a current iPod / mp3 player means either deleting songs (are you nuts!) or buying a new player. Great for the manufacturer, but not so much for the consumer. The different pieces of technologies are there, it's just a question of someone putting it all together, and marketing it to the masses.
I think, maybe I'll just hold on to my old cassette Walkman, for a little longer. The next really great personal stereo for me is just around the next corner.

Getting in to Gigging... by Pete Crewdson

There's a lot more to organising a gig than most people think; it can be an easy process, but most of the time troubles arise. Make sure you do it the right way and avoid the problems that so many others have to face.
Start Early: Make sure you leave yourself plenty of time to get the gig organised. Yes, you want to get bands playing and get your teeth in to it as soon as you can, but the longer you have to organise and promote your gig is ultimately better. Try to book a gig a few months in advance.
Don't go for all the popular bands: So you can get 4 big bands to play together and bring in quite a big crowd with each, but realistically, how many times does that band play in the same place within a few month of each other; the bigger the band, the more times they've been there before. Try out a gig with one bigger headliner and three smaller up-coming bands. Each of the bands get the gigging experience, and being younger and newer they probably haven't played many shows; that means more of their fans want to see them, and their show is something more special even than the headliners.
Don't overload: Both on equipment and bands. Only put on as many bands as you think is necessary, don't try to squeeze out 5 minute change-overs just so you can stick another band on, play it safe and keep it smooth. The same goes for equipment, using one drum kit all night is best, and getting the bands to help each other out when it comes to amplifiers is always a big bonus. Less equipment = less hassle, which ultimately = smoother gig.
Think big: Just because your putting on a small gig at the local music venue doesn't mean it can't sell out. With the right promotion and the right bands, any gig can get close to selling out on the night. Always think big when it comes to creating posters and promoting; look at professional posters and find the bits that draw attention. Stay away from cluttered posters with band websites and reviews scribbled all over them - when it comes down to it, the only thing people need to know is who and where the bands are playing.
Get on the bandwagon: So you don't like MySpace, you don't like Facebook, you don't like PureVolume - get over it and get on promoting. MySpace is the biggest promotion tool you could ever dream of. Make a digital copy of the poster and send it to all your MySpace friends; tell the bands to send it to theirs and tell them to keep sending it on to their friends. Viral marketing is key to a successful gig.
Pre-Sell tickets: This can not be stressed enough! Pre-selling tickets means that those people who like to say they're coming to a gig, but fail to show up have a ticket before they get there. It works as an insurance policy so people know they have a ticket, and will come to the gig because of it. If the worst comes to it, then you've still got the money from the advance tickets.
Sound check everyone early: Most engineers will tell you that it is better to sound check each band, and it is. Make sure that you get the bands to the venue quite a while before the gig so each gets time to sound check fully. Most bands will be happy to show up if they know they're having a good sound check for the show.
From experience, gigs go much more successfully when you inject a bit of common sense in to the equation; don't go in feet first, plan and get it right. Anyone can put on a successful gig when they know how.

Thomas Edison made the first recording of a human voice on December 6, 1877, but he did not record a singer. The first great singer to be recorded was Enrico Caruso, and he made over 250 sound recordings. There may have been singers prior to Caruso who were even better virtuosos but we have no way of knowing that because sound recording is the definitive judge of a singer's ability. In recording studios, it has often been said that "tape don't lie". Even the best recording engineers cannot make a good singer sound like a great singer. Skipping briefly through the jazz era, a few great singers who deserve honorable mention are Billy Holiday, Al Jolson, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby and Tony Bennett. The concept of what constitutes a great singer is subjective, but the key qualities a great singer must possess are range, timing, phrasing, pitch, timbre, emotional impact and originality of style.
Elvis Presley was the first great rock and roll singer. His first hit record in 1954 entitled That's All Right was a blues song written by Arthur Crudup and it proved that Elvis had a unique quality in his voice. Songs like Jailhouse Rock and All Shook Up demonstrated that Elvis was the epitome of rock and roll, and songs like Are You Lonesome Tonight and Can't Help Falling in Love showed the world that Elvis could put the emotion of love into a vocal track with intense male sexuality. With one of his last blazing bursts of energy in 1972, Elvis proved that he was still a hunk-a hunk-a Burning Love during his twilight years. Elvis can be credited for breaking down the racial barrier that existed for black singers within the record companies in the 1950's. Little Richard said, "He was an integrator. Elvis was a blessing. They wouldn't let black music through. He opened the door for black music." Elvis opened many doors. He let Pandora out of her box and girls all over the country began to scream at the very sight of Elvis. Much has been written about the King of Rock and Roll and his impact on our culture, but the focus of this article is on a unique vocal quality that has not received attention. Elvis pioneered many instantly memorable vocal mannerisms that shall hereinafter be collectively referred to as the rock and roll vocal schtick. It is possible that Elvis picked up his vocal schtick from Otis Blackwell, the songwriter who wrote many of Elvis' early hit records, because Otis sang his original songs on the demos that Elvis listened to and Otis originated much of the phrasing that Elvis recorded. But much water has passed under the bridge since those days and we may never know whether the Memphis chicken's schtick preceded the Otis egg.
The word "schtick" is derived from a Yiddish word and it refers to various bits of business that cause an entertainer to be instantly memorable. Prior to Elvis introducing the concept into rock and roll, it was very common in the movie business for actors to achieve fame by virtue of their schtick. Jack Benny became notorious for being stingy and a bad violin player even though in real life, he tipped lavishly and he was an expert violin player. Groucho Marx had his stooped strutting, his lascivious eyebrow raising, and his cigar. Elvis had his gyrating hips and his out of control, shaking leg, but he also put a new kind of mannerism into his singing. On All Shook Up, he turned "Mm mm mm, oh oh oh, yeah yeah yeah!" into a memorable chorus, predating the Beatles famous yeah yeah yeah's by about 10 years. Predating Elvis by four years, Fats Domino had already developed his signature vocal style by the time he hit the R & B charts in 1950 with The Fat Man which sold over a million copies. One year after Elvis opened the door with That's All Right, Fats crossed over into the mainstream with Ain't That a Shame in 1955, and soon millions of people found their threeee-ill on Blueberry heeee-ill. That there is rock and roll vocal schtick in a nutshell, and countless singers picked right up on the groove.
In the 1950's, original vocal styles literally oozed out of the radio every day. Tony Williams, the lead singer for The Platters, was a truly great singer who had it all - range, timing, phrasing, pitch, timbre, emotional impact and originality of style. As a professionally trained singer, Tony was able to express the emotional essence of previously recorded songs like Smoke Gets in Your Eyes with professional style and grace, but he also influenced the new rock and roll vocal style. In the number one selling hit record, Only You, Tony could have sung the words "Only you can make this change in me" using straightforward and traditional phrasing, but instead he sung "cand-a make this change in me" and threw in a bit of schtick. Marty Robbins and Ben E. King were also two seminal rock and roll singers who embodied all the qualities that define a great singer. There were many other outstanding singers during the 1950's but the most sublime singer of them all was Smokey Robinson. In addition to every other quality previously discussed, Smokey sang complex blues melismas as if God told him the secret and said "Smokey, you will make everybody think this is easy." Nobody can sing like Smokey Robinson, nobody can duplicate his vocals, and when Linda Ronstadt recorded her version of Ooh Baby Baby, she had to white out his melismas because she had too much sense to even try to duplicate him. Buddy Holly, among his many achievements, may be credited for introducing the hiccup into rock and roll vocals (fantastic schtick). But the award for Most Outrageous Rock and Roll Schtick of All Time goes to Little Richard for "a wop-bop-a-loo-mop alop-bam-boom" and his earth shaking, high pitched woo's that Paul McCartney duplicated with enormous commercial success. Other great primal rock and roll singers of the 1950's who deserve Most Honorable Mention include Roy Orbison, Brenda Lee, Del Shannon, Jimmy Jones, Frankie Valli, and the list goes on and on.
The great singers of rock and roll peaked during the 1960's and 1970's with John Lennon and Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Jim Morrison, and Janis Joplin. Robert Plant's 12 year career with Led Zeppelin began with the band's formation in 1968 and continued until John Bonham's death in 1980. That fatal day may have been the turning point in the history of great rock and roll singers because even though some very good singers achieved fame and success after 1980, none are in the same exalted league with the Great Ones. Discussing each of the great singers could generate an entire article for each one of them, but suffice it to say that history has already passed judgment on them and declared their venerable status. In terms of the key vocal qualities defined in the first paragraph of this page, Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin must also receive honorable mention. But in terms of the sheer number of hit records and brilliant vocals that incorporate all the qualities of a world class singer, Paul McCartney is arguably the best rock and roll singer of all time. It's always nice to end a treatise with a provocative pronouncement like that one, and then to immediately disappear into oblivion before anyone can throw a tomato.

"Christmas Voices of Allerdale", was conceived by Brian Melville who, as head of music at St. Joseph's school in Workington for 34 years, organised the "Christmas Concert" which ran until his retirement in 2004. The "Christmas Concert" at St. Joseph's over the years, like many other schools all over the world, became a special event during the year for the music department and on occasions involved as many as 140 pupils singing or playing Christmas songs arranged specially for the event. Some of these arrangements over the years became such a "hit" with school children and parents that to consign them to obscurity would have been a sad option. . After retiring from mainstream teaching in 2004, Brian then established Solway Music, an independent music support service for junior schools in Allerdale. Having already forged a working partnership with Loose Records, it then became apparent that a CD of Christmas arrangements could become a reality. The next step was to secure the co-operation of a number of schools in Allerdale and every one approached was happy to participate in the project which was beginning to take shape. The logistics of bringing together around 50-60 voices from around the district was a problem that would have been difficult and expensive to overcome given that all the schools are situated many miles away from each other. The solution was to work with each school in their own location and bring together each one in the recording studio. In effect, we had an Allerdale choir from six schools who never met. This involved teaching, rehearsing and recording each school in situ. The recordings were then mixed together and mastered at Record X studio.

Learning a chord-based approach to playing the piano might have you rockin' and rollin' in not time, but many people want to know and understand what they are playing by learning how to read piano music. This could take time, a few months or even years, but those who learn to read piano music don't have to hear a song before they play it. They simply look over the piece of sheet music and are able to 'hear' the score before them. Understanding the notes is like being able to read another language.
The first steps to learning how to read piano or keyboard sheet music involve learning the notes and clefs that a piece of music is composed of. This will let you know whether you need to play in a treble clef, or high tone, or if the piece is written for deeper or lower tones, called a bass clef. Next, you must be able to designate which notes are what, where they are located, and why they are there.
Notes are broken down and depicted individually on what is called a stave, the five parallel lines music is written on. Depending on where the note is on the stave, on the lines or in the spaces, this will formulate how a song should be played. Different parts of the musical score will detail each section's notes all at once to help the conductor lead an entire symphony. The next step to reading piano sheet music is a bit more complicated. The time signature is another important feature to focus on because it tells you at what pace the song should be played. These are often made up of vertical bar lines, which indicate when and where a song begins and stops. On this time signature there are numbers that indicate how many beats exist per measure. You'll learn to recognize the time signature, what it means, and how it controls the rhythm of a song as you continue learning how to read piano music.
The final step to understanding a piano score involves understanding the next type of signature. This is called the key signature. The key signature tells you in what key the piece should be played. This can vary from sharp, to flat, to natural. Sharp keys are the black keys found just above the white keys on a piano or keyboard. The notations on the key signature indicate what part or parts of a song need to be emphasized or not. By learning to read piano music, you will not only be able to understand the piece before you, but you will also gain a deeper appreciation for the music.

Laurie Larsons Aquila a Hidden Gem that Needs Discovery by William McRea

I recently purchased Aquila at CD Baby after reading a press release about Laurie Larsons latest CD. The 10 song compilation may be one of my best purchases in the last two years. On the whole the album features the amazing vocal styling of an artist obviously influenced by the music of the 60s. Yet there is something modern and compelling about both the sound of the music and Ms. Larsons vocals. Within each song lies a well crafted and produced performance that validates the singers pedigree and many talents.
Some of my favorite songs include My Time Will Arrive which has a bluesy, 60ish feel to it and Architect of Dreams a more spiritual song with haunting vocals that linger in your head long after the song is over. Road to Elysium is a very beautiful song with Ms. Larsons best vocals. I am particularly fond of the end of the song which features an a cappella vocal that is by far the best display of Mr. Larsons amazing vocal talent.
My favorite song on the CD is On This Day which not only features an amazing vocal performance but also a very tasteful guitar solo, that demonstrates the talent of the musicians that perform with Ms. Larson on Aquila.
The song Aquila is a bit pop, a bit reggae and a lot of fun. Mr. Larson combines her vocals with an augmented almost hip hop vocal accompaniment. Add to that some killer guitar playing and you have a fun sound that stands out on the CD.
Utopia features more great vocals and excellent finger style guitar playing. This highlights an important part of the production on Aquila the musicianship is truly first class, always adding to the vocal performance without over whelming it.
Child of the Wind is another favorite of mine. Ms. Larson captures the essences of a young girl, and her struggles to make the right choices. I relate to this song, because I have a young teenage daughter, and every time I hear the song it reminds me of her.
Light of Freedom and Center of Light are also well crafted songs. As are all the songs on this CD. It is no surprise that Ms. Larson is starting to receive strong radio play across the country. Each song is well crafted and very listenable. The best quality of Aquila is that you believe what Ms. Larson is singing. The lyrics are very personal and you know they are important to the singer. Nothing contrived or forced.
Is Aquila a folk rock, classic rock, or alternative rock CD? Honestly you cannot categorize Aquila or Mr. Larsons debut CD Artist Mirage in such simple terms, as her music truly cross many boundaries. And that is what I find so appealing about her music.
Aquila is a self produced and self promoted effort, but it is professionally recorded and the songs are complete performances. Most self produced albums simply do not have the quality and production to be worthy of distribution. Laurie Larsons Aquila is an exception to that rule, and is a hidden gem that needs discovery.

The period of 1968-1970 saw the appearance of credence Clearwater revival, with their hits green river and the anti Vietnam song fortunate son. But the classic rock uprising actually burst out in 1969 with Woodstock. The Woodstock Rock concert took place in Bethel, New York and witnessed a fan gathering of 500,000.
When you put collectively 500,000 fans with guitar distortions and The Who, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Joe Cocker, Jimi Hendrix, credence Clearwater revival, Janis Joplin and many more, what you get is the most electrifying experience of the century. Jimi Hendrix became a legend and Woodstock was etched deeply into the hearts and minds of those who were there to see history happen.
The year 1969 also was a year of rock catastrophe as it lost 3 stalwarts of the era, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Brian Jones of Rolling Stones and all three of them succumbed to drug overdoses. In the 70's, Classic rock gave the world some of the greatest talents that the music industry had ever witnessed.
The popular mainstream of the 70's was conquered by the Rolling Stones and new bands with guitar contorted sounds were catching on like wild fire. Lead guitarists came into the forefront with their solos that set the stage afire. David Gilmour, Jimmy Page, Tony Iommi, David Coverdale and Ritchie Blackmore became legends of the guitar world.

Christmas music is some of the most fun choral music out there, both to sing and simply to drink in. Some of my favorite Christmas music is more contemporary, but several have quickly become standards in our home. Celebration is always incomplete without music and Christmas music is always special. Christmas Music is the best way to get yourself in the holiday spirit. Christmas music is a tradition. Christmas music is perhaps one of the best known associations to Christmas traditions. But, the stock of Christmas music is so vast, that one can easily choose those which suit their individual style and mood. The reason we like Christmas music is because we only listen to it occasionally, so it brings back memories and warm feelings. For me, Christmas music is the quickest shortcut to sentimentality and nostalgia; yet I also love to explore new groups and find new sounds.
Choosing your Christmas music can be critical there may be members of your family who likes the traditional music while others will like the more contempory, the most important thing is to find a happy balance for all. Christmas music is probably my favorite thing about Christmas. Traditional pop Christmas music is glorious, if staid, and will always have its place of honor. Christmas Music is something the season cannot do without. Christmas music is written to accompany worship services, enliven the hosting of friends and guests in celebration, and to tell again the ancient story. It is great during the holiday season, but you can also download Christmas ring tones all year around, too. Christmas Music is the Music of joy and gladness.

And one of the most beautiful ways to hear our favorite yultide music is with a choir and orchestra. Christmas music is unique, naturally endowed with a cyclical shelf life that allows each hit to stay fresh forever. It is more enjoyable every day as the big day approaches. Christmas music is not just heard in stores and churches anymore - but on a number of radio stations in the nation's top 100. Listening to holiday music is a beloved tradition that helps get us into the spirit of peace on Earth and good will to all. If the usual Christmas music is really grating on your nerves, try different music, like classical or choral renditions of carols. Wherever you go this time of year, Christmas music is almost inescapable. The holiday lights are flashing and the Christmas music is playing softly in the background while you work.
Traditional Christmas music is some of the most fun choral music out there, both to sing and simply to get you in the festive mood. A better class of Christmas music is out there, waiting to be heard by those who seek it. Part of Christmas music is having fun. Christmas Carols You Can Play This Christmas With Just 3 Chords! by Duane Shinn

Did you know that there are literally thousands of songs you can play if you know just 3 chords?
It's true. Songs from "Amazing Grace" to "Cum Ba Ya" to "Happy Birthday" to "On Top Of Old Smoky", "My Country 'Tis of Thee", "Take Me Out To The Ball Game", "God Bless America" and countless others.
But there are also Christmas Carols that you can learn to play this Christmas if you know, or are willing to learn, three simple chords.
So what are these chords?
In any given key, there are 3 "family members" that are residents of that key -- the I chord, the IV chord, and the V chord. They are far and away the most likely chords to occur in any given key.
For example, if I am playing in the Key of C, and the first chord is the C chord and I have to guess what the next chord is, I would guess that it would be either the F chord or the G chord. Why? Because those are the other "family members." So we have narrowed the odds a great deal just by knowing who the members of the family are.
So how could I tell whether it should be F or G?
If the melody is a "B", then the chord is probably a G chord. Why? Because "B" is in the G chord, but is not in the F chord.
If the melody is a "A", than I would guess that the chord is F. Why? Because "A" is in the F chord, but is not in the G chord.
You can also just match one of the three chords to the melody to see if it sounds right. If it doesn't, try another of the 3 chords. It won't take long before you get the knack of matching chords to the tune of a song.
Does that mean that there are always just 3 chords in a song? No, but there are literally hundreds of songs that are made of just 3 chords.
Here are a few Christmas Carols you can play with just 3 chords:
O Christmas Tree Angels We Have Heard On High Silent Night Away In A Manger Joy To The World Deck The Halls Go, Tell It On The Mountain O Come, O Come Immanuel Star Of The East The First Noel The Holly And The Ivy While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen Hark! Can you use other chords in these carols? Of course. And they will probably sound fuller if you do. But you can "get by" with just 3 chords -- the family chords in whatever key you want to play them in.
Here are the primary chords (the family chords) of all the major keys (remember that the primary chords are the I chord, the IV chord, and the V chord based on the scale of that particular key):
Key of C: C, F, G
Key of G: G, C, D
Key of D: D, G, A
Key of A: A, D, E
Key of E: E, A, B
Key of B: B, E, F#
Key of F: F, Bb, C
Key of Bb: Bb, Eb, F
Key of Eb: Eb, Ab, Bb
Key of Ab: Ab, Db, Eb
Key of Db: Db, Gb, Ab
Key of Gb: Gb, Cb, Db
Do you have to know all these chords in all these keys?
No.
You can choose to play in just one key, or just a few keys.
But what you MUST know is the 3 chords in whatever key you want to play in! That means that the stark beginner can learn 3 chords in just a few minutes, and be able to play along with thousands of tunes, because most folk songs, hymns, country songs, and many rock songs just use the 3 basic chords. That's why people who know zilch about music can pick up a guitar or sit down at a piano or keyboard, learn 3 chords, and chord along while singing everything from "Silent Night" to "Joy To The World" to...well, you get the idea.
Go thou and do likewise. It's not too late -- Christmas comes every year right on schedule!

Nengon - The first form of son music in Cuba by Jon Griffin

Nengon was the precursor to both Son and Changüi. It evolved into Son in Santiago de Cuba and Changüi in Guantanamo province.
Nengon was traditionally played with a Tingotalango or Tumbandera. Basically the Tingotalango is made from a tree which has a rope tied to it and pulled down. The other end is then tied to a rock in a hole functioning as a Contra-Bass. Of course, the Marimbula took over after it's invention and eventually the Bass was used.
Modern Nengon is played with a Changüi ensemble, so from a practical point of view, a group is playing Nengon when the parts are much simpler and with very little or no syncopation. Clave, as it is now know, hadn't been invented yet so the time is just straight quarter notes.
The Cuban Tres is the main melodic and harmonic instrument with the Bongos and Marimbula also present.
The tres part plays a repeating pattern, which although it is harmonically and rhythmically easy, is the foundation for the song and must "groove" appropriately.
The bongo plays a very simple pattern and does not play lots of fills or embelleshments. The pattern (in common time) is typically a 1/4 note rest, 1/8 note on macho (high) head, 1/8 note on hembra (low) head, 1/4 rest, 1/4 note on both heads at the same time.
The marimbula (or Tingotalango) plays a very simple pattern of 1/16th notes on the and a (i.e. 2 e and a). Of course on a Tingotalango the part would be even simpler and probably be only an 1/8th note on the and of 2.

As a musical genre traditional Jazz requires a fairly specific Guitar sound - generally this has involved a very clean dry tone - with little to no effects (perhaps only a hint of reverb) - usually the neck pickup is used with the resultant sound required to be clear enough to pickup the subtle nuances and articulation of the playing.
Jazz Guitarists therefore need to carefully consider thier Guitar when setting out - luckily Jazz has been around for many years and there is a wide selection of instruments available. Traditionally Jazz Guitars are hollow body semi acoustics (though not always) and these have tended to favor P90 or Humbucker style pickups to produce the required sound - as stated there are many guitars on the market today - but here we list 5 classic Jazz guitars that helped shape the scene.
1 Gibson ES150
Made famous to the jazz community by Charlie Christian the ES 150 became his guitar. The ES150 became one of the world's first commercially available electric guitars. With its single coil pickup fitted at the neck and its acoustic shaped body with f holes - the 150 has that sweet warm jazz tone that became a world favorite.
2 Gibson L5
Another of Gibson's Jazz power trio (the others are the ES150 and the ES175) - the L5 features a large resonant body. With a history that goes back nearly 90 years the L5 has changed a little over this time and has featured different pickups (from P90's to Humbuckers). As the prestige rhythm guitar it has been played by a variety of greats including Wes Montgomery.
3 Gibson ES-175
With it's stylish Florentine single cutaway - the ES175 represented a departure for Gibson from their usual design - Debuting in 1949 - the 175 has been associated with a variety of Jazz greats from Herb Ellis to Pat Metheny.
4 Gretsch Country Gentleman/Nashville
While Gretsch are not considered jazz guitars per se - both the Country Gent and the Nashville are able to produce both versatile and authentic jazz tones. Both guitars offer a range of controls for adapting the tone of the guitar and can produce some versatile jazzy results - whilst the FiterTron pickups produce something that's unlike it's Gibson counterparts.
5 Fender Telecaster
With it's sweet and mellow neck pickup tone the telecaster offers something a little different that the usual Jazz fare - Traditionally a country guitar the telecaster has been featured with Jazz artists including Ed Bickert and Mike Stern.

Electric guitar packages are typically an all in one answer to the problem of getting someone started with an electric guitar.
Is it the best way to go for a beginner though?
In my opinion, probably not. Playing a new musical instrument is not only a labour of love, it is a war against embarrassment. Playing any instrument for the first time could be a painful experience for any unwilling audience and an affront on your ego!
So as far as a guitar is concerned, a good acoustic guitar would be my personal preference to learn an instrument.
Having said that, there is no denying that an electric guitar is a sexy instrument, and some people will not be denied. Perhaps you have already tried an acoustic guitar, and the call of rock and roll fame and fortune is too much for you?
Well if that is the case, then there are electric guitar packages that can fit the bill that won't break the bank. Remember that you will not be buying a classic Fender or Gibson guitar (unless you are completely loaded), but you can still buy a high quality instrument which will stand you in good stead for many years to come.
A standard package will comprise a guitar itself, a case, and amplifier and the appropriate leads to connect the guitar to the amplifier. I think it unlikely that you will be able to play any stadiums with this rig, but hey, you have got to start somewhere?
All you really need from your electric guitar package is an instrument with a decent, playable action (the height of the strings above the fret board), and an amplifier that will give you a good tone at low volume. At it the guitar looks really cool as well, then that is just a bonus!
The kit may or may not come with a tuner. You will need one whatever happens. I have always used pitch pipes, and great though automatic tuners are, you cannot beat the training given by tuning the guitar with just a pipe and your ears. Learn how to do it properly; you will appreciate it in the end.

Phil fischer abandons promising career to follow Christ by Keral

Seattle-- Singer/songwriter and wilderness bad boy Phil Fischer has walked away from his first album, which is about to go Gold to record Christian music.
Seattle hippie/wilderness guru, and songwriter Phil Fischer, best known for his hard hitting, Janice Joplin style concert performances in the Northwest during the late 90's and the early part of the decade, and a Bear attack that almost took his life in the Yukon finally got what he wanted; A hit album.
Problem is; he has walked away from it. For God.
Unable to get distribution or radio play in the states for his first album "Wounded Soul" , Fischer signed a deal with Papa Lopez Records, Inc. in Santiago Chile in December of 2003. During 2004 Fischer sold almost 387,900.00 copies of "Wounded Soul" in South America and sold an additional 122,000 cd's from his website http://www.philfischer.com.
Turns out Papa Lopez was not the good honest and wholesome record label like we have here in the states. Fischer received one check for $80,000.00 and the rest is history. Not only did Fischer lose 2.9 million owed to him by the label, but so did a slew of other artists and the lawsuits flew around Santiago but none has stuck.
Fischer filed suit against Lopez but in the end Lopez fled Chile, and has not been heard or scene since. Given the jungle atmosphere, and the lack of cooperation by South American officials, it is doubtful justice will ever be served to Lopez, and the other artists he signed and turned into South American Rock Stars.
With sale numbers soon to break Gold, Fischer was bombarded in 2005 with label offers from labels in Buenos Aires and as far away as Japan but the rocker failed to take any of the offers up. Who can blame him? After obtaining the sacred Gold and getting the shaft who knows what state of mind he was in.
The album that he tracked and recorded under the direction of Grammy Nominee Paul Speer will probably never see store shelved here in the states, and that's a pity.
Fischer was quoted by Northwest Musician a week ago on the subject and when asked what he is going to do now the rocker replied "Well, what can you do. You put your heart and soul into an album and pray that it sells and then discover it sold big time but you never get paid. How would you feel? Right now I am just going to concentrate on my Christian album. Maybe this was a message from the man above to use my talents elsewhere".
Who can blame Fischer for embracing Christ? With tragedy like that anyone would start attending church. "Wounded Soul" featuring the Smash singles: "Cobblestone Streets", "Windey Road", and "Fool for Love". Produced by Grammy Nominated Producer Paul Speer, "Wounded Soul" is a set of pop/rock ballads that are accentuated by bursts of instrumental virtuosity and tight, catchy songwriting. It's a must hear and his songwriting style reminds you of early Bruce and an older Seal.
Fischer is currently tracking his Christian work at Robert Lang Studios where Dave Mathews also records.
When asked if he expected to receive the same treatment in the Christian arena Fischer had this to say; "Well, I hope not! I just hope and pray I am accepted. I'm trying to do something that has never been done before in the Christian market. I am going backwards. Most Christian artists make it and then hop over to the secular market. I am releasing an album in the Christian market. We will see what happens. It's my best work, and God gave me each one of the eleven songs."
Fischer's dim hopes and fears about the Christian market may be real.
While Fischer is well known for his in your face rock shows, that kind of showmanship don't play well for the conservative Christian crew.
Even with his 8 top ten hits he co-wrote, slews of awards, and just flat out talent, word has it in the Christian world that Fischer cannot even lead Worship at his own Church. Apparently that's not a good sign in the Christian world.
What is probably working against him is his 29 arrests on record for everything from bar fights and public drunkenness too driving his Hummer over three Honda Motorcycles parked in front of the Central Tavern in Pike Street in the summer of 2000(the old area of Seattle) just because they were parked next to Harley Davidson's.
Bouncer Adam Jenkins told police "Phil asked them to move the bikes because in Phil's opinion they were not worthy to be parked next to a Harley. When they failed to move them, Phil hoped in his H1 and drove over all three of the bikes crushing them into the pavement! It was crazy; everyone was just standing there with mouths open. As a bouncer, I've seen a lot of things in my time, but that was a one of a kind thing. He likes Harleys, and he is always welcome here for a drink any time he wants!"
That kind of track record does not fly with the Jesus types, and it will be interesting to see just if his Christian album fares as well as his first. Word is from my Christian contacts is that he cannot even get a venue because the Jesus types are afraid of him. Its probably talent shock, but paddling uphill seems to be something Fischer has to live with, and something that he seems to be good at.
"Wounded Soul", Fischer's first and only world album may never see the light of day on store shelves here in the states, but there just may be hope for his Christian album. As of this writing his website is receiving 20,000 hits a week and counting; not to mention a growing underground of Christians emailing Fischer anticipating his album.
"New Believer", Fischer's first Christian album is expected Christmas of 2006.

Seattle bad boy Phil Fischer's first album "Wounded Soul" featuring Scott Rockenfeld of Queensryche and Ben Smith heart is still in demand despite legal troubles and is continuing to rip up the sales in South America where it was released in March of 2004. To date it has sold almost 337,900 copies, far out grossing even Ashley Simpson.
Fischer released the album in South America only because Fischer could not find distribution anywhere, even through Starbucks, which is in his hometown of Seattle.
On the album is Grammy Nominee Paul Speer who not only Co-produced the Project with Fischer, but his handy guitar work can be heard all over the album.
With only a paltry 500 copies to start with, veteran Latin Producer Manuel Fuentes signed Fischer to an exclusive distribution deal with his label papa Lopez Records in January of 2004 promising Fischer that if he would let him release and break the album in South America, getting distribution and radio play in the states would be a breeze.
Within 6 months after the release, the album creamed everything on the charts and has sold over 337,900 copies. Two singles "Cobblestone streets", and "Windey Road", two of Fischer's Best songs, have pulled almost 200,000 downloads . Even pop tart Britney Spears cannot top that.
Bad enough Phil has to run to another continent to get distribution but to make matters even worse, almost a year later attorneys for Fischer are still trying to find Lopez and all of the money that Papa Lopez Records took in, which was estimated at 3.9 million dollars US after the exchange rate, with 2.2 million belonging to Fischer.
If that was not enough to have the budding rocker run for cover, prior to the Lopez fiasco Fischer was contacted by Damon Evans from 101 distribution. In June of 2003 Fischer entered into an agreement with 101distribtion.com for 50,000 copies of his cd to be released into stores by Christmas of 2003.
Fischer anticipating the release, and with promises from Evans both in writing and via numerous emails that the cd would be in stores, Apple Hill Records, Fischer's own label, spent an estimated $60,000 promoting the album in movie theatres, radio, and television only to have Evans leave Fischer in the dust by not coming through with the distribution leaving fans hitting Fischer's website at the rate of 50,000 per day complaining.
The Agreement obtained by Northwest Magazine from Apple Hill Records, clearly shows 101 in breach of contract and the emails also obtained from Apple Hill Records show Damon promising to fulfill the agreement as late as August of 2004.
Fischer has hired yet another attorney to file suit against 101distribution.com. In that matter, but I am told they will not file suit until they conduct a thorough investigation into Evans which has been taking place now since October of 2004.
Fischer has since embraced Christ, which has left his fans screaming via email at the rate of 5000 a day. Phil is now tracking at a new album with Justin Armstrong at the world famous Robertlangstudios.com in his hometown of Seattle, the favorites new hang out of Dave Mathews. Mucho se había especulado sobre cuál sería el nuevo look de los chicos de RBD. . Chris, Poncho, Uckermann, Dulce, Ahahí y Maité ya lo habían advertido: 'será de homeless'.
El enigma se reveló anoche en la 7a Entrega Anual Latin GRAMMY en la Gran Manzana, lugar en el que RBD hizo vibrar a quienes asistieron al Madison Square Garden con su rendición de "Tras de Mí".

Mientras llega la eterna espera por su anticipado álbum Celestial, RBD, quienes estuvieron nominados al Latin GRAMMY en la categoría de Mejor Álbum Vocal Pop Dúo o Grupo, por su producción "Nuestro Amor", ya dieron una probadita de cómo los veremos ahora.
¿Cómo luce RBD en rags? No más corbatitas ni minifaldas, ahora lo 'in' es ver a Anahí con el rostro de manchas de periódico, a Uckermann con la camisa rasgada, a Poncho con los pantalones rotos, a Dulce María con microfalda vintage... en fin, un look bastante nice!
Durante su intervención en la ceremonia del Latin GRAMMY, RBD, con toda la energía que los caracteriza y cantando totalmente en vivo, -para que después no anden diciendo los chismosos que no cantan-, nuestro grupo favorito se encargó del penúltimo número de la noche.
Ahí, Anahí, Poncho, Dulce María, Christian, Maité y Christopher, quienes por cierto eran unos de los más esperados por el público, invadieron el escenario con su glamour juvenil y chispa encantadora, y guapísimos todos ataviados en excéntricos vestuarios muy a la moda homeless pero nice, par interpretar "Tras de Mí".
Y aunque no ganaron el único premio al que estaban nominados, los chicos le echaron las mismas ganas que si se hubieran llevado todos los premios de la noche.

Dicen que perro que ladra... no muerde. Alexis y Fido demostraron lo contrario con su nuevo disco: Los Reyes del Perreo. En esta producción, no solo ladraron fuerte con sus canciones de doble sentido, también le dieron una buena mordida a los reggaetoneros, que aún no evolucionan dentro del género. Relajados, sin 'fantasmear' y con la misma picardía que caracteriza sus líricas, el dúo 'perruno' nos habló de su nuevo cd, de la evolución de su estilo y del hip hop como otra alternativa dentro del género del reggaetón.
Aprobados por la 'Real Academia del Perreo'
Su primer disco, Los Pitbull, los puso en el mapa. Los Reyes del Perreo promete continuar con el mismo éxito, no sin antes mostrar algunas de las raíces de Alexis y Fido.
"Teníamos unos temas que habíamos hecho anterior al disco de Los Pitbull que en otros lugares jamás los habían escuchado. Muchos de ellos fueron número uno en emisoras de Puerto Rico. Entonces hicimos un disco donde incluímos 9 temas que hicimos antes del de Los Pitbulls y añadimos 5 nuevos. Esto se convirtió en Los Reyes del Perreo" explica Fido.
'Falta carretera'
Pero el hecho de que hayan vuelto al pasado no significa que Alexis y Fido no miren hacia el futuro. "Ahora mismo el género está esperando por una evolución. Salió de Puerto Rico con La Gasolina de Daddy Yankee para el mundo y ahí se quedó. Nosotros pensamos que al género le falta un montón de carretera y nosotros queremos ser parte de eso cambiando las cosas", dice Alexis.
Hay 'chuleo' pa' las nenas
A cambio, el dúo 'perruno' promete un disco más cuidado, con nuevo sonidos, pero con la misma picardía que siempre los ha caracterizado. "Todos los temas están patentados por la 'Real Academia del perreo'. Alexis y Fido hacemos temas que son bien fiesteros, son para las discotecas, son para que se olviden de los problemas. Son para divertirse con nuestro doble sentido, con nuestro 'chuleo' para las nenas. Hay algunos cantantes que tienen ese don de corearte un coro y escucharse bien armonizaditos. Nosotros no. Nosotros somos un poquito más hip hop style en Reggaeton" insiste Alexis.
Fusión con hip hop
Por otra parte, Fido agrega que los videos donde aparecen mujeres bailando en autos y que tanto caracterizan al reggaetón, ya deberían ser parte del pasado.
"Los videos también tienen que cambiar. Ser más profesionales. Nuestro video: 'Me quiere besar', por ejemplo, es otra cosa completamente a lo que está pasando ahora. El prototipo de video de reggaetón es con las mujeres bailando montadas en autos. Eso es lo que la gente asimila con el reggaetón. Nuestro video, en cambio, es completamente en estudio y salen tres mujeres nada más. Tiene más trucos de cámara, jugamos más con los efectos y los colores. Eso es lo que está de moda en los videos de hip hop".
El género sí está cambiando y Daddy Yankee es uno de los pioneros como indica Fido. "El reggaetón ahora mismo se está convirtiendo en una mezcla de reggaetón con hip hop para hacer una fusión diferente. Nosotros también lo estamos haciendo, no porque Daddy Yankee lo hizo con 'Rompe', sino porque queremos evolucionar dentro del mercado".

A Podcast RSS feed is what allows the entire system to function. To begin at the beginning, a podcast is a regular distribution of audio or visual files, called episodes, to a users podcast client. The people who use a podcast are called subscribers, and the podcast client is what allows them to subscribe to a feed. The podcast client is a program that connects to the internet, looking for a specific file the user has subscribed to, or told it to look for. That file is an RSS feed, a machine readable piece of coding that sends information back to the podcast client. RSS feeds can be used to distribute many kinds of information, and were originally used for blogging and distributing blog posts to subscribers. As time went on, however, a few people had the idea of enclosing information about media files within the RSS feed so that software could be written to find that information and download the files described.
The Podcast RSS feeds became a hit, and podcast clients were quickly written to allow people to use the new encoding. Podcasting became a means of quickly and cheaply sharing episodes with subscribers. Rather than requiring subscribers to visit the site that hosted the files everytime they wanted to know if a new episode was released, users could rely on the podcast client to do the work for them, keeping track of numerous podcast rss feeds that interested them and downloading the files to be viewed when they wished.
Podcast RSS feeds are now used to distribute a number of different types of podcasts. Some producers use it as way to share a comedy or news program that they produce, others podcast in order to share music files they create, and some podcast to share video files they have created and to showcase their work. Podcasting allows the producers to become radio or television stars without the large investment in time and money that wuld be required to do that. It is no surprise then, that P2P free music downloads have created a legal uproar.
Free music downloads have been widely disputed on both sides. Downloading an artist's work on P2P networks without consent of the artist or label can result in monetary damages or jail time. While file sharing networks are free, each user must decide whether he or she wants to risk these consequences in order to download many of today's popular songs for free.

MP3 PLAYERS: HOW IT ALL BEGAN You have probably seen some old movies where some unruly teenager carried on his shoulders one the first "portable" audio players--a blaring cassette-tape-playing two-speaker monster (if you're old enough, you may even have done this yourself). What can the desire of people to take their music with them do!
But the first truly portable audio player was the cassette-tape based Sony Walkman. That was extremely revolutionary in its time. This small plastic box (well, today it doesn't seem to be very small any longer) with earphones brought on the dawn of the portable audio player and sparked a legion of imitators. The subsequent introduction of audio CDs and CD-based walkmans marked the start of the digital music age.
A relatively recent revolution in this area was the introduction of Apple's portable music player, the iPod. Although portable mp3 players existed before it (the first mass market mp3 player, the Rio PMP300, was introduced in 1998), the iPod's unique design, its user-friendliness, and Apple's very good reputation for its sense of aesthetics created immense interest in the product. Soon iPod was catapulted to its current ubiquity. More than 7 out of 10 mp3 player owners today have an iPod.

Snoop Dogg, real name Calvin Broadus, may face charges after authorities discovered a 21-inch collapsible baton in his bags upon boarding a New York bound flight.
Snoop had the baton in his laptop case as he went through a security checkpoint at John Wayne International Airport, sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino said.
The rapper told sheriff's deputies that the baton was a prop for a movie he was filming in New York.
District attorney spokeswoman Susan Kang Schroeder said the prosecutors had not yet decided whether to charge Snoop Dogg and that their office only received the sheriff's report. The rapper was not arrested.
A collapsible baton is classified as a dangerous weapon. Snoop's baton collapsed to eight inches.
This wasn't the first time the rapper had a problem at an airport.
In May, Snoop Dogg and five other men were arrested at Heathrow Airport in London on charges of violent disorder and starting a brawl after some members of the rapper's party were denied entry to the first class lounge of British Airways.
Snoop, however, accepted responsibility for using "threatening words or behavior."
It has been reported that after the incident, British Airways has banned Snoop Dogg from future travel on the airline.
Moreover, Snoop Dogg was convicted in 1990 of cocaine possession and was charged with gun possession after a 1993 traffic stop.
He faced possible three years in prison, which was reduced to three years probation after the rapper pleaded guilty and promised to make anti-violence public service announcements.

On the lighter side, Snoop Dogg recently had a successful premiere of Snoop Dogg's Hood of Horror as part of Screamfest 2006. The celebrity red carpet arrivals and screening were held at Grauman's Mann Chinese 6 Theater in Hollywood.
The Xenon Pictures release, produced by BloodWorks, Social Capital and Snoopadelic Films, will open in theaters on November 17, 2006.
The celebrity packed after party of the premiere was also a surprise birthday party for Snoop, which was planned and hosted by his wife, Shante Broadus. The guest list included the filmmakers and co-stars from HOOD OF HORROR, as well as Xenon Pictures executives and a packed house of family and friends from the world of music, film and sports. Snoop Dogg treated partygoers to an impromptu musical performance.
Joining Snoop Dogg for the evening were his HOOD OF HORROR co-stars Danny Trejo, Anson Mount, Brande Roderick, Lin Shaye, Noel Gugliemi, Pooch Hall, former WCW champion Diamond Dallas Page and Detroit Piston Tayshaun Prince. The film also stars Ernie Hudson, Method Man, Daniella Alonso, LA Laker Lamar Odom, NFL stars Teyo Johnson, Justin Fargas and Glenn Cadrez, as well as Billy Dee Williams and Jason Alexander. A blend of horror, anime, live action, gore, and a strong dose of gallows humor, Snoop Dogg stars as Devin, a deceased gangster who has the dubious honor of escorting Satan's latest "conquests" to their just reward, and our personal escort through this City of the Damned.
Snoop Dogg's Hood Of Horror was written by Jonathan McHugh, Tim Sullivan, Chris Kobin and Jacob Hair. Martin Shore of Social Capital and Christopher Tuffin of BloodWorks, as well as Ted Chung, McHugh and Sullivan served as producers. Gordon Steel and John Baca of The Steel Company served as executive producers, in addition to Snoop Dogg.
The anime segments were produced by Japan's Madhouse, known for such classics as ANIMATRIX and TOKYO HUNTER, under the Direction of Academy Award® winner John Gaeta, known for his work on the MATRIX trilogy. The film is rated R for pervasive strong violence and gore, sexuality, nudity and language.
